The hair accessory game has changed over the past few years. And it’s not because of trends like two-toned hair or the “halo” trend of the ’60s and ’70s. It all comes down to how you wear your hair. Hair, as a whole, is an accessory that you’re meant to wear with other accessories. But if you’re not careful, you might look sloppy and out of place with a bad hairstyle and no accessories. Here are some hacks I’ve found that will help you get the most out of your hair without looking messy or unprofessional.
The Right Accessories
The first thing you should do is decide on a hairstyle that you love. Whether it’s a two-toned “Rosalinda” or “bob,” a low bun or a ponytail, there is always a hair accessory that complements it. In this case, all you have to do is follow the hair accessory guidelines below.
If you have short hair, do not use a clip for a two-toned look. It will look messy and unprofessional. If you’re opting for a low bun, use a clip that matches the hair color in your hair.
If you have long hair, always wear a ponytail or braid. Also, make sure the hair accessory you choose has an adjustable element. As a rule, I would not buy hacks something that will dangle over your ears. You will look like you have something stuck in your hair, even if you wear a clip.
What Do You Wear With Your Hair?
When I say accessories, I mean hats, clip-ins, pins, wigs, and even sunglasses. And I’m not talking about your flip-flops and sandals. Your hair needs to match your outerwear (or the season). For example, if you’re going out in the winter, you don’t want to go to the bar with all of your earrings and boots. If you do wear earrings or boots, make sure they’re not on top of your head.
If you’re wearing a headband, choose one with a design that complements your style. you’re wearing a classic braid with an updo, don’t wear another headband underneath your braid. These are small things, but it’ll make a big difference in how you look.
How Do You Wear Your Hair?
While I can’t tell you how to wear your hair, I can tell you what not to do.
Take a Tip from the Pros
Professional stylists and hair accessory experts will tell you that your hair is made up of three strands of different lengths: the bangs, the ponytail, and the top. When you cut bangs, the longer top sections usually fall out. So, to really create the perfect “top knot,” you need to wear a ponytail to keep the bottom and the longer top sections in. If you wear a ponytail, then all you need is a bobby pin to add volume, volume, volume. Bonus tip: Curly-haired ladies often ask for “top knots” with long pieces of hair peeking out, so if you have longer pieces like I do, wear the hair in a ponytail with a ponytail holder.
Speaking of hair holders, don’t get one of those stupid “hair scrunchies.” Sure, you can get scrunchies made with rubber, but that’s more for your hair to lose.
Do It Yourself
To help you get out of your own way, I highly recommend that you start carrying a kit of extensions with you. If you’re short on time or money, it’s easy to make your own style. To do so, it takes a few products to get your hair looking like a glam rocker. If you don’t want to spend a lot of money on extensions, I recommend getting the ones from Hot Tools. These clips will cost you $6 each and you get 14 clips per kit, which is enough to last you for the year.
Another cool thing Hot Tools does is let you download a clip on your phone, so you can easily use one of their clips in a pinch. You just have to grab the app, take a photo of the clip you want to use, and send it to yourself.
Make it your own
The most noticeable change when best buying tips hair accessories for yourself is that you want to be able to make them your own. What that means is that you want to take a piece that you already own and add it to your hair. If you already own an elastic hair band, why not add it to the front of your hair instead of wearing it around the back? Or, when you get a new band, you can incorporate it into your hairstyle, rather than have to use it only once. If you own a bobby pin, you can use it to secure your hair to a headband, and continue wearing that headband throughout the day to keep you cool. There are also plenty of ways to incorporate your accessories into your hairstyle without sacrificing the strength of your hair or adding weight to it.
