You can spend thousands of dollars on a VR headset with the greatest specs, but we believe that for most people who want to try VR, comfort and ease of use are more important.
With that in mind, the Meta Quest 2 comes out on top. It has adequate specs and the ability to use it without a wire. But it can also be plugged into a computer, giving you even more options for how and where you can use it. The controllers are simple to use and grip.
It can follow you around a room and track your movements. It also takes very little time to set up. Furthermore, because you can download games and movies, the Quest 2 has a large library of appropriate content.
HTC Vive Pro 2 is a virtual reality headset.
The HTC Vive Pro 2 headset, along with two HTC SteamVR Base Station 2.0 units and two Valve Index Controllers, is the perfect combo for players looking for the latest and greatest VR PC headset.
The Vive Pro 2 offers the clearest screen we’ve seen (though you’ll need a fast computer to get the most out of it), and the Valve Index Controllers offer comfort and the greatest hand tracking we’ve seen.
They work together to create a particularly immersive VR experience.
Who should receive it?
Virtual reality may make you feel as if you’ve been transported to another world—or, at the very least, as if you’re immersed in a fascinating new technology. VR entertainment includes short films, puzzles, social networks,
And other forms of VR entertainment. However, if you aren’t a fan of video games, the only VR-ready medium that can provide hours of immersive amusement, you may rapidly become bored. With that in mind,
Only the most affluent gamers or technophiles should seriously contemplate a VR system at this time.
It’s important to keep in mind that this is still a developing technology. You’re essentially a test subject, assisting developers in determining how the headsets should be utilized.
Games on traditional consoles such as the Xbox and PlayStation are not the same as virtual reality games. For beginners, motion-tracking controllers that bring your hands into the virtual environment are more intuitive:
Throwing a mug at a robot feels (sort of) like throwing a mug, and ducking for shelter sometimes requires genuine ducking. This makes the game more immersive and intuitive than traditional video games, which rely on you pressing the appropriate combinations of buttons on a controller to move around.
I’ve never been a fan of Halo or Gears of War, but I had a blast playing shooting games in virtual reality. During testing, though, an experienced player (but VR novice) told me that he liked the game.
How we choose PCMag
We reviewed comparative guides from PCMag, Wired, and CNET while looking for VR systems to test.
We only looked at headsets that were designed for home use, had the capacity to track hand and body movements. And hand controllers—you lose a lot of the enchantment of VR if you don’t have those characteristics.
The best headsets, in our opinion, also have the following features: Room-scale tracking: The headset you buy should be able to track you throughout an area the size of an average living room, whether the sensors are incorporated into the headset or meant to be installed on a wall.
How did we do our research?
We’ve continued to compare new models to old favorites as VR has progressed. We put up and tested the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive in the first round of testing in 2016. And then had four VR newbies (with gaming skill levels ranging from zero to expert) utilize each device as well.
In 2018, we compared mobile VR headsets to the standalone Oculus Go and Lenovo Mirage Solo. The Vive Pro was also put to the test against the Rift. We tested the Rift against the Rift S in our 2019 testing lineup, which included the Oculus Quest.
In 2020, we put the Meta Quest 2 and Vive Cosmos Elite to the test. In 2021, we put the Valve Index, HTC Vive Pro 2, HTC Vive Focus 3, and HP Pavilion x360 through their paces.
